It seems that
this question is given to us every year about this time (celebrations of
Hanukkah and Christmas). With all the secularism and commercialism of our
day and the continual ignoring of the Biblical nativity story, believers are
trying to cope with all these attacks upon the birth of our Lord Yeshua and
are often confused. While this article may be a bit different from what you
have heard previously, it is our hope and prayer that it will receive some
careful consideration by Bible students everywhere.
In my university days, Ancient History was of great interest to me and
became one of my major fields of study. I was especially interested in Rome
because so much of our Bibles are related to that period of time. Here are a
few facts that may help you in trying to answer the question "When was
Yeshua (Jesus) born?" We will begin with Luke 2:1-14 where in verse 1 we
learn that Caesar Augustus made a "decree that all the world should be
taxed."
1. CAESAR AUGUSTUS ruled from 43 BC to 14 AD. His real name was Octavian and he was the grandnephew of Julius Caesar. It was under his reign that the Pax Romana (the Roman peace) was declared throughout the empire beginning in 30 BC.
2. CYRENIUS (Quirinius) is called the "governor of Syria" in Luke 2:2 and we are told that "this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria." The Greek text actually says that Quirinius "was governing" in Syria. Flavius Josephus refers to a census in 6 AD when Quirinius was the actual Governor. But, at this point (Luke 2:2) Quirinius was merely handling administrative duties on behalf of Varus, the actual Governor. Egyptian records state that a census was done by Rome every 14 years and that it took several years to accomplish it.
3. HEROD THE GREAT was alive at the time of the Messiah's birth according to Matthew 2:1. One of the problems which scholars have had in dealing with the time of our Lord's birth is a reference in Josephus where he records an eclipse on March 13, 4 BC and says that it was "shortly before Herod died." According to the account in Josephus (Antiquities 17:6:4) Herod had a high priest killed, and Josephus says that this very night was a Jewish fast day when the eclipse took place, the only fast day would have been March 13 which took place during the Purim celebration.
Apparently this March 13th eclipse of the moon was a "partial" eclipse, not a total eclipse that happened on March 23, 5 BC. Josephus says that Herod died before the Passover of 4 BC (Antiquities 17:9:3).
Time between the birth of the Messiah and Herod's death is necessary since Joseph and Mary with the baby fled to Egypt and did not return until after Herod's death according to Matthew 2:18-21. If Josephus is correct, then Jesus would have been born before 4 BC. However, we do have evidence of additional "eclipses" (both partial and total) that would bring us down to later date for Herod's death. Historians, however, have long held that Herod died before the Passover in 4 BC. If this is correct, then the date of the birth of Yeshua could have been as early as 6 BC or 5 BC.
SOME HISTORICAL PROBLEMS TO FACE
1. TERTULLIAN, church leader and historian, said that the birth of Jesus was 41 years after Augustus began his rule, and that Augustus died 15 years after the birth of Jesus. The actual date of the death of Augustus Caesar was August 19, 14 AD. It is interesting to note that Tertullian also said that Jesus was born 28 years after the death of Cleopatra who died in 30 BC.
2. IRENAEUS, a disciple of Polycarp who was a disciple of the Apostle John, says that Jesus was born in the 41st year of the reign of Caesar Augustus. Eusebius, a great church historian, also says about the same thing. The 42nd year of Augustus ran from the autumn of 2 BC to the autumn of 1 BC.
3. ZACHARIAS, the father of John the Baptist, was a priest "of the course of Abia (Abijah)" according to Luke 1:5. There are 24 courses (divisions) of priests according to I Chronicles 24. Abijah's course (division) was the 8th course among the 24 courses. When the Jewish Temple was destroyed by the Roman Governor Titus on August 5, 70 AD, the first course of priests had just taken office. By tracing back carefully, the 8th course would have ended their duties on July 13, 3 BC. The birth of John the Baptist would be 280 days later, around April 19-20, 2 BC (which, interestingly, was Passover that year!). The birth of Yeshua (Jesus) would have been six months later (Luke 1:36) which would place it in the fall of 2 BC. The very interesting fact in all this is that the actual date in the fall of 2 BC would have been Tishri 1 on the Jewish calendar, which is Rosh Hashanah, the Feast of Trumpets!
Our conclusion (if we have gotten all the facts straight!) is that
the Messiah, our blessed Lord Yeshua could have been born on September 29 in
2 BC (later view than most historians), The commonly accepted view based on
the remarks of Flavius Josephus would be in the fall of 5 BC (possibly as
early as 6 BC),
Personally, I am happy to celebrate the birth of the Messiah on any date of the year you wish it to be! The good news is that in the city of Bethlehem, ISRAEL, the city of King David, the Savior was born, and He is "Christ the Lord", Messiah, KING of kings and LORD of lords!

In these verses, God links open homosexuality in a society to sinful 'pride' and 'arrogance'... the sin of Satan. Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed ('cleansed' with fire) because they were filled with pride and arrogance while flaunting their sexual immorality and their homosexuality openly before God. They mocked God and they had no fear of God. They were also found guilty of having 'fullness of food' without acknowledging God who provided it, and having 'an abundance of idleness' in the land (basically they ate, drank, watched TV, and allowed their 'Gay Pride' parades... the people had become so de-sensitized to sin they even stood by as their homosexuals tried to 'gang-rape' the two men/angels God sent to warn Lot ... while their worthless priests, rabbis, ministers, and 'reverends' were assuring the people in the pews that God's Word and God's Law didn't really mean what it said and didn't really apply to them and they could continue to do whatever felt good or right "in their own eyes," even when in direct opposition to God's Law. All of this reflected their lack of belief and their arrogant and rebellious attitudes toward God and His Word. Sin meant nothing to them and there was no fear of God. Would these charges convict any people or nation(s) you know today? God's judgment against Sodom was was given as a warning! The Bible warns the coming "Apocalypse" will be like the judgment against Sodom (only worse), and this time it will come against the whole world! Our time is short. God is pleading with us to stop (repent of) our sinful ways and return to Him before it's too late. With open arms and with tears of joy He will welcome any and all who willingly return to Him through the One He sent forth to save us sinners ... Jesus (Yeshua) ... the promised Messiah. The coming Antichrist) Today's "Santa Claus" no longer reflects the Christian life and loving kindness of the 4th Century (saint) Nicholas of Myra (see above) ... the "spirit" of today's "Santa Claus" now distracts us and leads us away from the true message and meaning of Christmas ... and most people have never taken the time to consider the "Santa Claus" phenomenon and its potential spiritual impact upon children. When considering today's "Santa Claus" I am reminded of that old tale many of you have heard about two little old American ladies who crossed the border to go shopping in Mexico, and while they were there they found, befriended, and carried home what they thought was a cute little Chihuahua puppy dog that was sick ... but later were terrified to discover it was really a rabid rat!
WHY?
1. As with the "fruit" in the Garden, Satan uses very "appealing" things to lead us away from God and God's Word. In Isaiah 14:12-15 we find one of Satan's great desires is to be "exalted" and "be like" God. As with the "fruit" in the Garden, the "spirit" and "image" of Santa Claus has been presented to us and to our children in a very appealing (and seemingly harmless) package ... and in a very real way he is portrayed to be much "like" God. We are told Santa (shift the letters around a little and see whose name pops up) "always knows when you are naughty or nice," and "rewards you when you are good and punishes you (with burnt coal) when you are bad," and he will only appear "if you believe in him," and then every year ("coincidentally" on the exact same night and day Christians have set aside to remember and to celebrate the prophetic and miraculous birth of God's Son, the promised Messiah, who was sent forth to deliver us from Satan, the "Evil One"... Matthew 5:37 .... Matthew 6:13 ... Luke 11:4 ... John 17:15 ... 2 Thessalonians 3:3), and we are also told Santa has the power to supernaturally and "miraculously" visit all the children around the world at the same time to bring them gifts and goodies ...
2. These characteristics are designed to imitate (and now mock) characteristics of God and Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha'Mashiach in Hebrew).
3. How far does this very "lovable" and enticing deception go? Well, we have been told one of Santa's other names (just watch "Miracle On 34th Street") is "Kris Kringle" ... Kris Kringle derives from the German term "Christkindl" ... which means "Christ child!" ... (see WND link above.)
4. Santa Claus has been molded into a cherubic, white-bearded, red-suited, lovable, and attractive character whose sole purpose now is to entertain us and feed our desires for earthly things ... while powerfully taking our eyes and minds and the eyes and minds of our children OFF of Jesus Christ (God's loving gift to Mankind who was given to save us from all our sins, from Satan, and from Hell) ... (Prophecies of Messiah) ... and Jesus Christ IS the SOLE purpose a believing Christian should have in thankfully celebrating and honoring Christmas ... (And, as a side note, if you feel embarrassed or ashamed to celebrate the birth of the promised Messiah during this Christmas Season, it might be a good indication as to whether or not you will go to Heaven (and be "delivered from the Evil One" ... Satan) if you die today ... and whether or not your name will be found written in the "Lamb's Book of Life" (Revelation 20:15 and Revelation 21:27) ...
Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha'Mashiach in Hebrew) is drawing and gathering out of this world a people for Himself who are not ashamed of Him ... those who like Him and love Him (as He loved us) and believe (trust) in Him (to save us from our sins and from Hell) ... and are thankful for what He has done (and is doing) for us .... and who humbly and sincerely want to be with Him in His Kingdom of Heaven.)
5. A believing Christian has to be honest and truthful with their children concerning "Santa"... yet many Christians unknowingly and good-naturedly still play along with the "Santa Claus" game and wait for their children to find out the real truth about Santa Claus from some stranger ... maybe at school or on TV.
6. What then is a child to think? "Hmmm, mom and dad told me all these stories and had me believe all these things about Santa Claus, and now I find out that none of it is true. This must mean mom and dad have been lying to me ... just making it up all this time. Yet, all these characteristics they have lead me to believe about this jolly, old (yet ageless), lovable, fake character called Santa Claus sure seem to sound a lot like those things mom and dad have taught me to believe about God and Jesus ...and, if they have lied to me about Santa Claus, why should I believe anything they (or the Bible) says about God and Jesus ... or Heaven and Hell??!!" (A couple of Satan's other titles include "the father of all lies" (John 8:44) and "the lying spirit" (1 Kings 22:22).
"Then Jesus (Yeshua) called a little child to him ...
Whoever causes one of these little ones who believes in Me to sin,
it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck
and he were drowned in the depths of the sea.
Woe to the world because of offenses, for offenses must come,
but, woe to that man (or woman) by whom the offense comes!"

7. So, (like "the cute little sick Chihuahua" in the story above) if we take the time to study and consider and strip away the attractive and cutesy and lovable trappings of "Santa" what we find buried deep within is now simply the world's (or Satan's) version of a pseudo-Christ (or anti-Christ) and pseudo-God (or anti-God) ...
"And no wonder!
For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light (Beware! )
Therefore it is no great thing if his (Satan's) ministers
also transform themselves into "ministers" of righteousness, (we are warned some church leaders are not of God)
whose end will be according to their works (Hell)."

... for the "spirit" behind Santa likes to lead our hearts and minds (and the hearts and minds of our children) away from God and Jesus ... especially at the time we should be remembering and teaching our children about the awesome hope and promise we have been given through Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah of Israel ... yet ... how many children are now preoccupied with and breathlessly awaiting Santa Claus ... a cuddly and lovable character who was created to dangle the promises of mountains of colorfully wrapped gifts designed to feed "the lusts of the eyes and the lusts of the flesh" ... which is exactly the opposite of what Jesus Christ and God teach us in the Bible ...
"Do not love the world
or the things in the world.
If anyone loves the world,
the love of the Father is NOT in him (or her).
For all that is in the world --
the lust of the flesh,
the lust of the eyes,
and the pride of life --
is NOT of the Father
but IS of the world.
And the world is passing away,
and the lust of it;
but he who does the will of God abides forever (in Heaven).

it is the last hour;
and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming,
even now many antichrists have come,
by which we know that it is the last hour."

8. Enjoy your time with family and friends and exchange gifts, or cards, or whatever you like to do, but do it while remembering and celebrating the sacrifice and the love it cost God to give us the most precious gift of His Son (who freely offers us the hope and promise of eternal life in Heaven) ... and as you enjoy all the colorful and festive lights think of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who is "the Light of the world" (John 8:12).
And remember (or learn) ... Jesus (God) teaches us to desire Spiritual gifts which are manifested in the gift of "Love"... and the Bible teaches love is NOT a "feeling"... it is "actions" ... it is not about us ... it is about others ... the Biblical love we are commanded to reflect in our lives is in how we act ... and how we treat others (including our wives ... our husbands ... our families ... our friends ... and strangers ... and enemies.)

HE (Jesus Christ ... Yeshua Ha'Mashiach in Hebrew) received the full punishment, torment, and wrath which WE would receive for all our sins against God and God's Law (remember ... the Cross represents Hell.)
HIS (Messiah's) perfect righteousness is then placed upon ALL who will believe in faith that "Messiah (Christ) died for our sins according to the Scriptures (Tanakh), and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), and showing the proof of our faith by honestly and sincerely turning away from all our sinful ways (which, according to the Bible, will be marked by a lifelong struggle against sin), and fully trusting in HIM (and His completed work on the Cross) to save us from all our sins (past, present, and future) and from the eternal darkness, loneliness, and torment of Hell ...
THEN, we are told, when God looks upon all those who sincerely believe and trust in Jesus Christ (Yeshua Ha'Mashiach in Hebrew) as their "Savior" who died on the Cross to save us from our sins and from Hell, HE (God) then sees us in HIS (Messiah's) pure light of righteousness, and no longer in the "filthiness" of our sinful unrighteousness (the Bible explains ALL OF OUR SINS AND GUILT WERE PLACED UPON HIM (JESUS) AT THE CROSS ... AND THE FULLNESS OF HIS RIGHTEOUSNESS AND INNOCENCE WAS PLACED UPON US THE MOMENT WE BELIEVED IN HIM IN FAITH ... and at that moment we have the complete and absolute assurance our eternal life in His Kingdom of Heaven is secured.) He "substituted" Himself for Mankind on the Cross (Hell). As Jesus (Yeshua) said with His last words on the Cross, "It Is Finished" (literal translation "PAID IN FULL"... God sorely judged nation Israel through war and captivity for killing babies (and God has not changed) . . .
"By causing them (babies) to pass through the fire ..." Back then, unwanted babies were 'offered' to a false god 'Molech' (a god of lust and pleasure) by placing the baby onto the glowing red-hot arms of a small bronze statue which was placed in the fire. Do a study of Molech (an idol, false god) or passing babies 'through the fire' in the Bible and you will find God will judge a nation (and a world) for the killing of babies for convenience. God says a lot about this killing of unwanted babies ('passing sons and daughters through the fire') in the Bible. The technology we now use to kill these 'unwanted' babies is different, but the intent is exactly the same. Now, instead of calling them 'priests' we call them 'doctors,' and instead of burning the babies alive (passing them 'through the fire'), we cut them into little pieces while they're alive and call it 'abortion.' God sees it and it causes Him to cry out in agony and anger. This is one more reason why the coming Apocalypse is also called 'the Day of God's Wrath' which will come upon 'a morally corrupt and violent' generation. Also, the Bible warns us that 'not only those who do such things, but also all those who approve of those who do such things' will be held just as guilty. Please remember, our God is a forgiving God who is filled with grace and mercy, and even those who have done or approved of such things can still be washed clean and forgiven through the 'blood of the Lamb of God,' our Lord, the only One who can now save us from our sins, Jesus-Yeshua the promised Messiah.
